Mary Eshbaugh Hayes grew up on Conesus Lake, one of the Finger Lakes of New York State. She is a graduate in the Class of 1950 from Syracuse University with degrees in Journalism and English. Rode a bicycle 2,000 miles across Western Europe the summer of 1949 with an American Youth Hostels group (all college students…11 of us). Came out West after college graduation. She has been associated with The Aspen Times as a writer, photographer and editor since 1952 and she has written the Around Aspen column for some 50 years. Also writing for Aspen Magazine, Destination Magazine and Aspen Sojourner Magazine, she has won many state and national awards. MEH collected the recipes and took the photographs for her cookbook “Aspen Potpourri” which she first published in 1968 and has done 5 editions. She wrote the book “The Story of Aspen: the history of Aspen as told through stories of its people ” in 1996 and there have been three editions. She has also published a line of note cards featuring color photos of Aspen doors. She is married to silversmith Jim Hayes and they are parents of 5 children and grandparents of 7.
